A prostate gland biopsy is a transrectal approach that uses a needle and ultrasound guidance. With this procedure small tissue samples can be obtained and analysed for signs of prostate cancer.
The specialist will indicate this for men with high PSA levels or patients in whom a suspicious element has been detected during a transrectal ultrasound or endorectal magnetic resonance examination.
It can be carried out on an outpatient basis, under local anaesthesia or sedation.
